Compact, Low-Cost, High-Resolution Spectrographs for Exoplanet Science

Clark Baker (Cambridge) Cambridge Fluids Network - fluids-related seminars 1 December 2020 1:00pm ONLINE - Details to be sent by email The size and cost of stabilised, high precision radial velocity spectrographs is prohibitive to a number of science cases: large target number RV surveys, high-resolution integral field spectroscopy and coupled high contrast imaging/high dispersion spectroscopy observations to name a few. In this talk we will discuss the design and construction of a compact (smaller than a shoe-box), low-cost (less than £10,000), high-resolution spectrograph prototype which is able to achieve comparable resolving power to its large scale contemporaries. With this proof-of-concept in mind we will speculate on the applications of such a device and how this could impact the future of exoplanet instrumentation.
